This course aims to give women of all ages the tools to become qualified maternity assistants.  A maternity assistant is a person who will enter the home of a woman who has recently given birth, to assist her and her family.

The work of a QMA will consist of taking care of the newly delivered mother and her baby, running the home, childcare, cooking and light housework.  This work requires dedication, intelligence and a desire to help someone else through an exciting but difficult time.  As well as financial gain. candidates will find this role personally rewarding and fulfilling, having made a real difference to someone else's life.

A career as a QMA would be ideal for anyone looking for work in the healthcare sector, who prefers working in a private home as apposed to a public setting.  This role provides flexibility, the ability to freelance and will be lucrative.  It is possible to build up a good reputation and hence a constant flow of work.

Candidates should have good intelligence and common sense, a desire to learn new things and be discreet.  They must be interested in basic biology and psychology and having a caring nature and a good work ethic. 

Modules covered include:

  • Physiology of labour, delivery, and puerperium
  • Care of newborn infants
  • Child development and children's needs
  • Post natal nutrition
  • Psychology of the family
  • Understanding yourself in relation to employer
  • Employment, tax and insurance

Candidates are expected to work for up to 30 hours in a practical setting (work experience) depending on their experience.

Candidates are assesed through ongoing assessment, a mid-term written assignment and a final multiple choice exam.

Entry requirements:

It is recommended that candidates should have achieved a level of education equivalent to 5 GCSE's, however exceptions will be made for candidates with appropriate life skills.

Candidates will need to attend an interview and submit 2 references prior to being accepted onto the course.
