This course delivers the application of skills, knowledge and understanding within realistic situations to improve literacy and communication skills. 
 
It is aimed at candidates who do not have formal literacy qualifications and wish to improve their literacy skills.
 
This qualification focuses on three skills:

Speaking and listening

·  Engage in Discussions

·  Word

Upon completion, learners will be able to:

Speaking and Listening

• Develop listening/responding skills
• Listen and respond to spoken language, including straightforward information and narratives.
• Follow straightforward explanations and instructions, both face-to-face and on the telephone
• Speak to communicate information, feelings and opinions on familiar topics, using appropriate formality, both face-to-face and on the telephone
• Engage in discussion with one or more people in familiar situation, making relevant points
• Responding to what others say to reach a shared understanding about familiar topics

Reading 
• Read and understand short, straightforward texts on familiar topics accurately and independently
• Read and obtain information from everyday sources
• Recognise different purposes
• Identify between main points and specific detail
• Use organisational features to locate information
• Use different reading strategies to find/obtain information
 
Writing 
• Planning and draft effective writing
• Write in paragraphs
• Sequence chronological writing
• Use language suitable for purpose and audience
• Proof read and revise writing for accuracy and meaning
• Write to communicate information and opinions with some adaptations to the intended audience
 
Entry Requirements:
 
No formal entry requirements. Learners will be assessed at the start of the programme to ensure that they are on the correct course of study.
