The TEFL course will be The Trinity Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CertTESOL). This course is designed for those with little or no experience of teaching English. It gives an introduction to the theory and practice of contemporary English teaching and an insight into the challenges facing the learner and the role of the teacher.

The course is accredited in England by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority at Level 5. This is equivalent to first year university study.

Candidates must have competence in spoken and written English, and an ability to explain relevant features of English to learners in a communicative context. They must be able to work co-operatively as a member of a training group and respond constructively to feedback on personal performance.

Prior to a course commencing the participants will need to complete an application form for the course and undergo an interview with course tutors. It is essential that participants complete this application and interview process and are accepted onto the course.

The course will cover such areas as:

  • the main TEFL teaching methods
  • how to plan and deliver a lesson
  • how to teach language: grammar and pronunciation
  • how to teach the productive skills of speaking and writing
  • how to teach the receptive skills of reading and listening
  • classroom management techniques
  • how to deal with cultural sensitivity in the classroom
  • how to correct learner errors
  • teaching practice and observation sessions

This teaching practice is delivered to genuine learners of English. Candidates are also given a range of written and practical assignments to be completed to well-defined standards.

There will be a focus on communicative teaching methods and how to achieve a level of student fluency in the classroom. The TEFL training will be highly practical and each course module will have a reflective component which encourages individual teacher development.

Entry Requirements:

Candidates must be a minimum of 18 years of age.  They must have qualifications to level 3 (A Levels), which will enable them to enter higher education.
