Focus of the Course

This qualification is achieved whilst in employment and aims to recognise a candidate’s competence with regards to their competence within childcare.

This qualification is available at 3 levels:

• Level 2 – GCSE A* - D
• Level 3 – A Level
• Level 4 – Manager 

In order to embark on the NVQ, you must be in employment for a minimum of 16 hours per week. This can be in a voluntary capacity.  The level you choose to embark on will be a joint decision between the candidate, employer and assessor. The chosen level must reflect the candidates’ current employment role.

At level 2, the candidate will be working as a nursery assistant and performing general duties under supervision, whilst at level 3; the candidate will have more experience, more responsibilities and will be in a supervisory role whilst at work.  At level 4 the candidate will be working at management level.

The structure of the NVQ requires the candidate to meet with the assessor approximately once every three weeks and together with observations of the candidate’s work; a portfolio of evidence will be compiled. This is submitted to the examination board as evidence for assessment.
